The Masters program Graphic Design took me to Morocco. I visited two cities which could not be more different. One is ancient, located near a high mountain range, with façades glowing brightly in red – Marrakech. The other one is located by the sea and presents itself with skyscrapers and white facades – Casablanca. more
During the C.o.c.o.i. workshop with Emmy van Thiel I got to know more about the artist group “Oulipo”, who are known for their self-imposed restrictions while writing texts. Emmy lectured also more about “cabinets of curiosities”. These cabinets were created by merchants, the nobility and the clergy at the beginning of the 17th century. Various extraordinary exhibits such as mussels, minerals and animal preparations were exhibited. more
Andalusia was the last region in Spain to be under Islamic rule. Important buildings such as the “Great Mosque” in Córdoba or the “Alhambra” in Granada bear witness to this era. more
In 1998, the “Sandberg Institute” in Amsterdam launched a video experiment that allowed students to create a movie of exactly one minute. Starting with this experiment the “The One Minutes Foundation” was founded. Until today, the foundation’s archive has grown with over 10,000 movies. more
The kind of Japan which I imagined before doesn’t exist. I thought there were still a few neighbourhoods with old traditional buildings left, small gardens and a certain small town life. more
Japan is about 9000 km by plane from Western Europe. It is a country which was almost isolated from the outside world from 1600 to 1853. Until today some of this isolation seems to have remained. Although Japan looks incredibly modern and international from the outside there is only a foreign population of 2%. more
